Arguably the most famous tourist attraction in the German capital is the Berlin Wall. It stood as a physical and symbolic barrier between West Berlin and East Germany for almost thirty years. When it fell in 1989 many famous artists tagged it with their work turning it into a piece of modern art. Visit the open air East Side Gallery where more than a kilometre long section of the wall is housed. With over 100 paintings from this memorial for freedom is a must-see.

Berlin has around 200 museums which can be a daunting prospect to any sightseer. Luckily you’ll find the most important ones in one spot. The Museumsinsel or ‘Museum Island’ is World Heritage Site. Highlights are the bust of Egyptian queen Nefertiti and the world’s largest mounted dinosaur Skelton in Berlin’s Museum of Natural History. Make your visit extra special and visit over ‘Lange Nacht der Museen’ when most of the museums stay open until 2am.
